Fuel, tolls and parking on the Dalaman coast

On the Dalaman coast you fill up at attended petrol stations that take cards and cash, choosing petrol (benzin, usually unleaded 95) or diesel (motorin) as your rental car requires. The only toll on the main routes from Dalaman Airport is the Göcek tunnel on the D400 towards Fethiye; there are no motorway tolls in the area. Town centres such as Fethiye and Marmaris use paid car parks and attended street parking.

How do I buy fuel in Turkey?

Most petrol stations in Türkiye are attended: pull up, tell the attendant the fuel type and either 'full' or an amount in lira, then pay at the pump or in the shop by card or cash. Stations are frequent along the D400, including several within a few minutes of Dalaman Airport, and in every town on the coast.

Check the fuel type at pickup and look at the label inside the fuel flap. Putting petrol in a diesel car, or the reverse, causes damage that insurance usually excludes.

  • Benzin (kurşunsuz 95): unleaded petrol
  • Motorin: diesel
  • LPG (otogaz): only for cars converted to it
  • Hybrid cars such as the Corolla use regular petrol

Are there toll roads between Dalaman, Fethiye and Marmaris?

There are no motorways or motorway tolls in the Dalaman, Fethiye and Marmaris area. The one toll on the main road is the Göcek tunnel on the D400 between Göcek and Fethiye, charged in both directions at a toll plaza. Fees change periodically, so expect a small charge and ask the rental company how tolls are handled on your car.

If you prefer to avoid it, the older road over the Göcek hill is free, but it is longer, narrow and winding, and can be slow in summer.

What is HGS and do I need it in a rental car?

HGS is Türkiye's electronic toll system: a sticker tag on the windscreen that is charged automatically on motorways, bridges and tunnels that use it. Many rental cars already carry an HGS tag, and the company settles the toll charges with you afterwards. You only need it if you drive on HGS toll roads, which you are unlikely to meet on local trips around Dalaman; for long drives, ask the rental company at pickup.

Where can I park in Fethiye, Marmaris and the resorts?

In Fethiye and Marmaris centres, parking is mostly in paid car parks or attended street zones, where an attendant gives you a ticket and you pay on leaving or on the spot. Ölüdeniz beach and Iztuzu beach near Dalyan have paid car parks, and Göcek's marina area has limited space. Most hotels and villas outside the centres have their own parking.

Do not park on yellow-painted kerbs, at bus stops or across driveways; illegally parked cars can be fined or towed, and the fine is passed on to you.

  • Fethiye: paid car parks near the harbour and market
  • Ölüdeniz: paid car parks near the beach, full early in summer
  • Dalyan: car parks by the river and at Iztuzu beach
  • Marmaris: paid parking near the marina and centre
